Hello everybody! It’s been kind of quiet around the forums lately… hopefully you’re all off reading and reviewing your recommended book(s). This is just a reminder that round one closes at the end of August (which is only two weeks away – where did the time go?), so in order to complete the challenge and be eligible for a giveaway, make sure you post a link to your review in the forums!

(Also, if you want a graphic to put with your review, there’s one available over in the sidebar… help us to spread the word for the next round!)

Ready, set… Recommend!

Just a reminder… if you haven’t made your recommendations for other participants yet, now’s the time! In order to fully complete the challenge (and to be eligible for end-of-challenge giveaways!), you have to make recommendations for at least five other participants. So head on over to the forums and get recommendin’!

If you haven’t made your recommendations yet (or aren’t sure if you’ve done five), here are some folks who want you to tell them what to read: (Click on the link to head to their recommendation thread.)

Medieval Bookworm‘s looking for “historical fiction, fantasy/sci-fi (only if character-driven), literary fiction, historical romance,YA, and even regular history”.

Vasilly is an eclectic reader who is trying to read more good non-fiction.

Simone‘s trying to get away from Victorian lit into some more contemporary authors, particularly fun historical fiction.

Ashley likes horror, young adult, and chick lit, but is willing to branch out into new genres, and needs you to tell her where to start!

Meaghan wants something “full of drama and suspense” for her summer reading.

Jen‘s looking to break out of her rut of sci-fi and fantasy novels, and diversify the authors she reads.

Think you can help any of those folks out? Head to the forums (remember there’s more than one page!), and while you’re there, click around to the threads of other participants I didn’t list here… They’ll all appreciate your input!

Round One off and running!

Welcome to everybody! Within the first week of the challenge, we’ve already got a great number of participants signed up. This is going to be so much fun!

Remember, if you’ve just registered for the forum, you’re only half signed-up! You need to create your own thread in the Recommendations forum, so we can start recommending you books!

I think the “official” timeline (2 weeks for sign-ups, 2 weeks for recommendations, 2 months to read and review) has pretty much gone out the window… plenty of people are already making some great recommendations, and I think some folks have already started hunting down the books they want to read!

So go ahead, jump in and start making recommendations… just please be mindful of the fact that there are still new people joining who need recommendations too! If you can, please try to visit the threads of new members, or people who don’t have as many recommendations, and make sure everyone’s got plenty of great books to choose from!

Welcome to the 4 Rs Challenge!

Hello, everyone! Welcome to the 4 Rs Challenge! We’re so glad to have you here.

The 4 Rs Challenge was created as a way for people to find new books and new authors, as well as a way to let bibliophiles share the love of some of their favorite books.

The way it works is this: You create a thread asking for recommendations for yourself. At the same time, you visit other people’s threads, and make recommendations for books you think *they* would like. Once you have your list of recommendations, you pick one of the books, read it, and review it! Simple!

We’ll repeat this process every three months, so that you can sign up only when you think you have the time (although we hope to see you every round!)

It’s minimal-commitment: In order to complete the challenge, you only have to read one book, plus make recommendations for others.

But hopefully it’s also maximal-enjoyment: You’ll be generating lists of potential books for yourself, broadening your literary horizons, getting to see what other people think about your favorites, and there may even be some prizes along the way!

Be sure to check out the steps for signing up and the FAQ. If you’ve got more questions, you can ask them on the forum or in the comments here.

Also be sure to subscribe to this blog to stay up-to-date with challenge news and announcements!
